Identity Automation at Houston SecureWorld 2015

Last week, a couple of us on the Identity Automation team attended Houston SecureWorld 2015 courtesy of a special invite from the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA). Many thanks to our friends at ISSA for the opportunity to serve on their behalf.

While we had a great time and learned a lot from our peers in the security industry, we found two panels, both part of the ISSA track, to be especially insightful.

The first panel, "Recent Government Initiatives in Cybersecurity," was presented by Houston ISSA chapter president Roy Wood. As cyber attacks escalate in size and scope, cybersecurity continues to emerge as a larger federal defense priority. Because of this, the federal government now plays an indirect role (through laws and regulations), if not a larger, more direct role, in every company’s cybersecurity strategy. Roy talked not only about the government implementing its own cybersecurity initiatives, but also how the government is assessing, developing and enforcing guidelines that all companies must follow.

Houston ISSA chapter vice president Ricky Allen presented the other panel, titled "How To Stay Ahead of the Security Industry." Technology changes quickly, but that’s only part of the equation in security. Compliance is just as important. Ricky shared some really good tips and advice on how to keep up on current trends and advancements, both in technology and compliance.

I already can’t wait until next year’s SecureWorld when I can reconnect with the people I met at this year’s event and learn even more from them.
